How long will free solar in DC last? Why the window is closing
Free solar in DC is real today โ but federal law has already eliminated most of the tax incentives that make it possible. What remains expires at the end of 2027. This is not a vague warning about the future. The deadlines are written into law and some have already passed.

Most DC homeowners who are thinking about going solar assume they have time. They think "I'll look into it later this year" or "maybe next year." What they don't realize is that the financial structure that makes free solar possible has already been partially dismantled โ and the remainder is expiring fast.
What the law already changed
On July 4, 2025, federal legislation eliminated the 30% residential solar tax credit โ the incentive that homeowners could claim when purchasing solar with cash or a loan. That credit was originally set to continue through 2032. It was ended nearly a decade early, with no phase-out period. As of January 1, 2026, homeowners who buy solar with a loan or pay cash receive zero federal tax benefit. That door is already closed.
The only remaining federal pathway is a free PPA โ where the solar company owns the system and claims the commercial Investment Tax Credit under Section 48E. But that credit is also ending. To qualify, solar projects must begin physical construction by July 4, 2026 โ less than three months from today โ or be placed in service by December 31, 2027. After that deadline, there is no federal solar ITC of any kind remaining โ for homeowners or for solar companies offering free installations.
The commercial ITC that funds free solar PPAs requires construction to begin by July 4, 2026. That is less than 3 months away. After December 31, 2027, there is no federal solar tax credit remaining โ residential or commercial. The full incentive structure that makes free solar possible in DC disappears completely at the end of 2027.
The timeline at a glance
Why most homeowners don't realize this
Solar companies have strong incentive not to advertise that the window is closing. A homeowner who knows there is urgency might act faster โ but a homeowner who feels pressured might walk away entirely. So the information often goes unsaid.
The result is that thousands of DC homeowners are still in "I'll think about it" mode โ not realizing that the financial foundation supporting free solar is already eroding and will be largely gone within 20 months.
The neighborhood factor โ waiting makes your chances worse
There is one more thing most homeowners don't consider when they decide to wait. The more solar systems that get installed in your neighborhood, the more likely it is that the local grid will require expensive upgrades before your system can connect. Every neighbor who goes solar before you adds load to the same aging infrastructure.
A street where two or three homes have solar may have no upgrade requirements. That same street with ten or fifteen solar systems may trigger Pepco infrastructure requirements for the next homeowner โ even if their individual system is small. Waiting is not a neutral decision. Every month you wait, more solar goes online in your area and your chances of a clean, free installation decline.
Waiting is not a neutral decision in DC. Every month you delay, more neighbors go solar โ and the chances of facing a costly Pepco upgrade at your address increase. The homeowners who act while grid capacity is still available are the ones who avoid that problem entirely. Read about DC grid upgrade costs โ
This is not a sales tactic โ it's law
Urgency is one of the most misused tools in solar sales. "Prices are going up," "this deal expires Friday" โ DC homeowners have heard it all, and most of it is artificial pressure. The closing window for free solar is different. The residential ITC elimination is already law. The commercial ITC construction deadline of July 4, 2026 is written into federal legislation. The SREC decline schedule is set by DC statute. None of this is a salesperson's invention.
The right approach is not to rush into a bad decision. It is to get properly informed โ understand your specific address, your roof, your Pepco bill, and the real numbers โ and then act from a position of knowledge. The window is real. The urgency is real. But informed action is always better than rushed action.
What to do right now
If you have been thinking about going solar in DC, the time to get properly informed is now โ not next year. Get a real assessment of your address, your roof, your bill, and whether Pepco interconnection at your property is likely to be straightforward or at risk of upgrade requirements. A reputable company will give you this information clearly before you sign anything.
If a company is pushing you to sign before giving you complete information โ that is always a red flag. But if you've been sitting on the fence waiting for a better time โ understand that the financial structure supporting free solar in DC is already eroding and will be gone within 20 months.
